Should You Try a Pixie Cut?

Maybe you saw a super cute pixie cut on a star like Anne Hathaway or Jennifer Lawrence. Wherever you found the idea, pixie cuts make a bold impression and can highlight the face in a fun and edgy way. If you’ve been mulling over bringing the latest picture of Victoria Beckham into your hair salon, here’s what you need to know first:

  • Pixies are about as drastic as you can get in a haircut. If you have medium or long hair and you’re thinking about a pixie, just remember that you can’t add hair back once it’s gone. If you aren’t ready for an intense cut that will change everything about the way you look, start with a bob and gradually go shorter until you achieve the iconic look.
  • The hairstyle is not necessarily low maintenance. Pixies act differently depending on hair texture, layering and type. You’ll be surprised by how many different ways you can style it, but you may not be able to get away with washing-and-going like you might think. Ask your stylist for some tips beforehand so you know what kind of commitment you might be facing when styling it on your own.
  • Pixies grow fast. Even hair that doesn’t normally grow fast will appear to once it’s been cut very short. The upside is you get to go in for pampering a little more often. The downside is your hairstyle can turn into a mullet pretty quickly if you’re not getting regular trims.
  • Washing and drying is much easier. Get ready for the easiest shower routine you’ve ever had. Add a little styling cream to damp hair, and it'll be dry well before you get to work.
  • Anyone can pull off a pixie cut. Magazine articles may tell you differently, but done right, a pixie cut can make anyone look good. The key is to communicate with your stylist beforehand. But a pixie is not the type of cut you want to try out with a new hair stylist; go to someone who knows what your hair does, and together you can figure out what will work best for you.
  • Your face will look different. A pixie cut will highlight your face very well. You may notice features you hadn’t before, or it could intimidate you. Either way, understand it'll be different and may take some getting used to.
  • It could change you forever. One of the best things about a very different haircut is that it is an opportunity for a makeover. If you’re trying to explore another side of yourself, a pixie cut may give you an extra boost of sass and confidence. Use your new do to try out some new clothing styles and makeup. Whether you love it or hate it, you'll have learned something about yourself in the process.

Still feeling good about the change? Go into your hair stylist for a consultation first. See what a professional thinks about the possibilities and the pictures you bring. Then give it a week. If you still feel confident you’re ready for the change, go for it – and enjoy your new look!
